Common Body Piercing Problems

If you have ever experienced piercing then you would know that though it is not very painful, but requires a lot of care afterwards for a few weeks. You need to take proper care of it because bacteria definitely attack the piercing. Here in this article you would find all the problems that are associated to piercing and how to look after piercing.

Over cleaning:

Always avoid cleaning with a harsh cleanser as it would tender the skin and your skin surface would irritate. The piercing usually releases a puss liquid so using a cleanser directly may harm your skin. However it would be better if you dilute the cleanser with water to form a think solution of the cleanser and then apply it gently. It is a good thing to clean the piercing at least once a day but do not start worrying about it too much. Obviously touching the pierced area again and again may cause infection to your skin. Not only this, but it can also make the skin raw allowing more and more infections to get inside the pierced area.

problem with piercing

Infections:

Infections are very common with the fresh piercing. Fungi and bacteria attack the skin to cause it infection. Although human white blood cells defend the body, specifically the pierced area. Having swelling, pain, redness and discharge of thick brown or green puss is common, however it would help you if you can compress it a bit, but it can be only done in the early stage. Always keep a check on the pierced area, and if you think that bacteria are there, then use anti- bacterial cream. This is easily available on medical stores and not expensive either.

Another important thing that one needs to keep in mind is not to remove the jewelry. If you remove jewelry this would give way to bacteria to enter inside your body and from there it can travel anywhere inside the body, infecting the tissues and organs of the body. If you get into any serious problem then please don’t try to resolve it on your own and consult your doctor or nurse who are expert in cleaning the wounds. It is a simple healing process that takes time, but obviously you need to take care of it.

Metal Hypersensitivity:

Sensitivity is another issue that people usually have. Many are sensitive to nickel. For the past few years this issue has become even more common. This is mainly because the metals used in the body piercing are not pure. The best thing is to use a hypoallergenic metal for piercing even if you are not allergic from metals. They avoid damaging your skin, resulting to fast the healing process. It is better to ask the body piercer about any metal sensitivity that you possess prior to start piercing.

There are people who don’t even know if they have metal hypersensitivity. Even if don’t know, still it is the responsibility of the piercer to raise the question of sensitivity. People, who react when wearing watches, buttons on jeans or belt-buckets, can suppose to have nickel allergy. However, it is nothing dangerous and quite common in people. If you have pierced and the skin becomes itchy, red, dry or sore than its better to return to the piercer and ask him to change the jewelry to a biocompatible metal.

Migration:

When we mean migration in terms piercing, we refer the skin to settle into a different position. In piercing, skin usually settles into a different place from where it is pierced. It does not mean that the piercing would move on entire body to settle on a specific position. It simply means that it would shift a few millimeters away from its original location. It is also known as “parking”. Either it happens to those who are metal allergic or those who are wearing huge and heavy jewelry, increasing the elasticity of the skin.

One of the best examples of this would be the navel piercing, where if the has little space in navel to wear the jewelry. In this case it would become difficult for the piercing to heal due to the stress that jewelry would have on the pierced area. If it occurs with you then don’t wait at home, visit the piercer and ask for more comfortable size and well shaped jewelry.

Scarring:

It is rare for the skin to heal while exactly matching the surrounding tissue. It usually heals in different thickness, in different ways for different people, and forming different type of scarring for different type of damage. Any piercing that has been worn for years will leave a scar if it were removed.

Many people shock once they know that their skin would not heal to match the original surrounding area of the skin. It also depends upon the skin, as every person has a skin different from the other, so it may react differently. It is better and wise to get your skin examined before attempting to have your skin pierced. However these scars are very little to be hardly ever noticed by anyone. However another kind of scar known as the Keloid scarring can occur to anyone. It usually appears in a large red and purple mounted on either sides of the piercing. It can be sore sometimes as well, but not always the case. Some people use tea tree oil, Germ seed oil, and olive oil to treat there scar, while others apply natural sea salt solutions.

Boils and Abscesses:

This is caused when the bacteria attacks the skin tissue and are contained by the white blood cells. Boils are less threat full, while the abscesses can rupture the skin tissues, causing to spread more infection in the body. However they can be easily dealt with, if you bring them into notice earlier. Abscesses usually occur in the cases of new piercing where the puss or fluid has not drained properly. Abscesses may also lead to cause you fever and nausea. In the case of boils, keep the piercing free of bacteria. It can be dangerous, so if you are not aware of how to take care of your piercing then do visit the doctor.

PIERCING AFTERCARE AND REMEDIES TO COMMON PIERCING PROBLEMS

Love and care is exactly what your new piercing needs. Not taking care or using the wrong and harmful products is not only harmful, but it also prolongs the piercing healing process. Most of the piercers would give you a set of instructions that you have to follow. Most of the people do not consider their advice, resulting into a serious infection. For those who have pierced or planning to have piercing in near future a complete set of instructions are here in this article. These recommendations would help you a lot, only if you follow them.

Common piercing Aftercare:

Before visiting the piercer here are a few important things that you must already have at your home, so that you don’t have to run to the market to find out things that you need. Here is a list of a few things you might need:

  • Sea Salt

  • Mild Anti-Bacterial or Antimicrobial Liquid Soap/Wash

  • Cotton Balls

  • Cotton-tipped Swabs

  • Small disposable cups (2-4 ounces)

H2Ocean 1.5 Ounce Purified Ocean Salt Water Piercing Aftercare Spray

Antibacterial Gentle Cleansing

Cleaning Your Piercing:

First and the most important thing is that you should never touch your piercing with dirty hands, so always wash your hands before touching it, your hands might have germs and bacteria that may cause infection on the piercing. You would also need cotton to clean the piercing. Soak the cotton balls with warm water and carefully wipe away any dirt that gathers around the pierced area. Never reuse these cotton balls again, just throw them away once used. Also apply the liquid soap around the piercing area; you don’t have to move your jewelry then rinse the jewelry and piercing area with warm water, making sure that all soap is removed. Use a clean paper towel to clean your piercing area.

Important Tip:

Some piercers would suggest you to rotate the jewelry to clean the pierced area well. Although, it is not a false advice however it may cause more problems than good. Any bacteria present on the jewelry can easily get into the raw piercing, causing irritation and even infection. So it’s better to clean the piercing and jewelry without moving it.

Useful Healing Aids and Products:

  • Tea Tree Oil: Tea tree oil is usually used to cool and refresh the irritated piercing. Only use the best quality tea tree oil that is diluted in pure water.

  • Emu oil: It is used for the purpose of healing; it gives best results when used for healing a piercing.

  • Saline Solution: This would not cause you much amount, and it is also easily available than most of the other products. It is quite effective in healing and soothing a new piercing. It can be also used as a substitute for the sea salt soaks.

Avoid Using:

  • Ointments: People use several kinds of ointments to ensure that no bacteria remain on the piercing. However these ointments do nothing more than clogging pores and kill the good cells healing the piercing.

  • Hydrogen Peroxide: it is also used for killing the bacteria, but it also destroys the white blood cells at heal the piercing. If you use hydrogen peroxide, it would cause irritation and also increase the time period for healing the piercing.

  • Rubbing Alcohol: Alcohol cause the skin to become dry and it also irritate the new piercing, leading to infection. So one must avoid use it on the piercing.

  • Glyoxide: It acts similar to hydrogen peroxide; glyoxide contains hydrogen peroxide which hinders the healing process and cause even more problems.

Sea salt soak can also be used for the new piercing and even for the irritated piercings. It is a simple way to soothe pain and remove all the infection, if done properly.

Almost every piercer would give you a different advice when it comes to piercing. You can even find a lot of information on the websites. Various advice and aftercare methods do not necessarily mean that some of the methods and techniques are incorrect or they are not genuine. Since every person has a different skin type and it reacts differently when a specific product or technique is applied on it.

One may find ointments a good product to remove the bacteria and for the rapid healing, while for others it may worsen the situation by killing the white blood cells. So you would find almost a unique treatment from person to person. This information comes from years and years of experience by the industry leading professionals. For this reason, I have mentioned a few more important points that may be helpful to you.

  • Always wash your hands prior to touching or cleaning your piercing. We use our hands throughout the day to perform several tasks, so they are full of germs and bacteria. So it’s very important that you wash your hands with a good soap or hand wash. It is very easy to have infection which can lead to hospitalization and even death. While having hospitalization and death are very exceptional cases.

  • Wash your piercing with mild hand soap; ensure not to use a soap that contains fragrance. If you are using an antimicrobial soap then make sure that it is not very harsh. Avoid using any kind of dish soap, as it does not do any good to the fresh piercing. You can find soaps that are specifically sold for fresh piercing. Rinse the soap once the piercing is cleaned. Always remember never to take jewelry out to clean it.

  • This step is only for the oral or oral related piercing. Rinse your mouth out with a non-alcoholic mouth wash. If your piercer suggests you to use an alcoholic mouth wash, then dilute it in water and only then use it.

  • It is good to have a sea salt soak. You can get the sea salt from the grocery stores around you location. Make sure that the sea salt you purchase does not contain any additional ingredients and its 100% pure.

How to Hide Your Tattoos and Piercings During a Job Interview

How to Hide Your Tattoos and Piercings During a Job Interview

A practical way of getting away with tattoos and piercings in a stereotyped society
Hiding Your Piercings and Tattoos to Sell Your Qualifications

Body piercing and tattoos have been in our cultures even since the ancient times. They hold rich significance and meaning artistically and culturally. In our modern culture however, art and culture have stereotypically fell to a different category from professionalism. We see most of its consequences in applying for a job. We don’t want to work on a job wherein we are not allowed to be ourselves with our self-expressions in our tattoos and piercings, do we?

What could have gone in into the minds of employers to have such considerations anyway? Let’s face it. In job interviews, employers only see a tiny sneak peek of your whole personality and skills. Most companies rely most of the times on first impressions to protect the company’s name. Because you are applying for the company and not otherwise, you are subject to fit in to the company’s dress codes and even in their stereotypes.

We are well aware today that while piercings and tattoos have growing popularity and acceptance, some people still associate tattoos (especially those written on red ink) with gang members, criminals or ex-convicts and piercings with Goths and punks. And we can take some companies away from that list.

So the question is: Is it good to hide the piercings and tattoos or not? First and foremost, if you’re applying for a job to a company, you’re basically selling out your talents and skills for the company’s benefit and you don’t want their attention to be focused on the story behind your piercing or tattoo instead on your qualifications. So the best thing to do is to hide it. Interviews don’t last forever anyway.
If you are still planning to get tattooed, it’s good to place them in places that can be easily hidden with clothes such as on your chest or your legs or your lower back. You can hide the tattoos on your arms by wearing a long-sleeved polo or those on your neck by wearing a turtle-necked sweater. Others apply make up to conceal an openly placed tattoo.

While tattoos are easy to hide, piercings may require to be taken off especially those which have large studs or attractive rings. That’s good if the wound has already healed but it may be quite painful for those which are only pierced recently. You can conceal it however by using flesh-colored plastic balls or a smaller silver ball to be less conspicuous.

While most companies have issues with body art, others embrace it especially those which do not require you to interact with client or an artistic career. You might want to apply to those companies that share your passion for body art. Book sellers like Borders for example view persons with tattoos or piercings as interesting instead of threatening.

Indeed tattoos and piercing can never be a hindrance for success if determination and desire is there. You can be yourself and get the job you want. Let us just remember that qualification for a job is not skin deep. Your performance speaks for itself. It’s the sincerity for doing the job that counts.

Removing Scars Left from Your Piercing

When the time comes that you have decided to take off your piercings, you probably would face a slightly disturbing problem—scars.
Scars primarily caused by piercings are called keloids. They appear to be raised fibrous tissues that occur mostly on skins that experienced traumatic injury with the piercing. Though keloids are not dangerous, they can be embarrassing as they may appear to be reddish or pink at times.
Some may say that once you have those scars, you will have them for the rest of your life. But they are wrong. There actually are ways that you can do to get rid of those scars. Here they are:
Wait until the wound is fully healed
Be patient. Your body is your first doctor. It can do the healing by itself giving a small size of the piercing. Some piercings can show no scars at all and some scars only appear to places where you can temporary hide them under your clothing.
Apply topical Vitamin E
You can buy a Vitamin E gel cap from department stores or pharmacies. Apply the gel to the scar and rub it well. Do this daily to help reduce the size of the scar.
Apply aspirin paste
Though not yet proven by most doctors, this has been done by the old folks back then and it worked. To do this, crush aspirin tablets to powder and add water to make it into a paste. Apply it to the keloid and wait until it dries. Wash it well with clean water. Repeat this daily until the scar disappears.
Compress the scar with a bandage
This can very well applicable to those scars that can be hidden by clothing such as those in the belly. Tightly apply bandage over the scar regularly for a period of six to twelve months to help reduce the keloid scars.
Rubbing with bio-oil
You can use natural remedies such as bio-oil to help reduce those scars. Bio-oil is a good source of nutrition for the skin.
Apply cocoa butter
It is often used to reduce the appearance of stretch marks but it can also prove to be effective on scars. It moistens the skin so that it becomes flexible and soft.
Add Mederma to your sunscreen
This is for scars that are exposed to the sun. Mederma is an over-the-counter topical cream that is used to heal the scars. Along with the sunscreen for preventing unequal discoloration, it can do well on healing the scar while preserving your skin’s beauty.
Massage the scar
While this may take several months to fully eliminate the scars, massaging is proven to be effective in reducing raised scars by breaking down the scar tissues.
Cover the scar with silicone gel wound
According to study, silicone gel wound can help reduce the thickness of the scar as it softens and flattens it.

With the advancement of technologies today, there are also surgeries designed to get rid of scars. Though they may come in high prices, they can permanently and directly remove the scar off your skin. With all the cheap and easy yet patience-requiring ways mentioned above, I suggest you weigh things up before deciding to get serious in removing your scars using surgeries. Also do not forget to consult with your plastic surgeon or piercer before you decide to undergo a scar removing surgery.
Here are some of the surgeries available:

Plastic surgery
This can surely and permanently make your scars disappear but this will require a fully healed piercing.

Resurfacing procedure
I do not necessarily recommend this because it will only dissipate over time. This is done by filling the missing tissue made from the pierce. Collagen or fat will be injected under your scar to level your skin, but it’s not really worth the try.

Corticosteroid injection
Steroids are injected to the skin and cause it to create new skin around the area. It will take many injections before seeing your results though, but you can take it if the pain is worth seeing your skin scar-less.

Additional tips

If you know that someday you would have to take your piercing off, might as well you would start preventing scars. One thing is taking care of your piercing by not taking it off by yourself mainly to avoid infection. Infection will basically lead to greater chances of scarring.

Getting rid of scars is like forgetting the past and moving on to the future. If getting your skin pierced was fun, removing its scars should equally be as fun.
