Now acupuncture may look like the goose among the ducklings in the typical classifications of piercings. Or you may not look like as badass as those fellahs who pierce themselves with killer barbells and classy jewelries as you lie on the practitioner’s table looking like a porcupine pierced with thin needles. NEEDLEs to say, acupuncture still IS piercing.
Acupuncture had its origins in China. It does not bear the cultural symbolism or social personal glory, but it deals more with the flow of qi through the channels known as meridians. This ‘qi’, although no scientific or physiologic correlation has been discovered yet by scientists and researchers, is believed to be the universal wave flow of nature. The flow of qi when channeled properly in the human body can correct the imbalances of the stimuli for hormonal production.
In modern studies, the accepted medical functions of acupuncture are only symptomatic control of pain and nausea while other claims of its benefits are only attributed to placebo due to the lack of scientific proofs and detailed study.
In traditional Chinese medicine however, disease is generally perceived as a disharmony or imbalance of the flow of qi, yin, yang, xue and zang-fu and the external symptoms are only manifestations of these imbalances. Back then acupuncture was highly individualized that is why it is based on philosophy and intuition rather than controlled scientific research. That is why the effectiveness of acupuncture when viewed in the scientific vantage point is such a vague picture because of the involvement of the placebo effect.
Instead of using jewelries and rings, acupuncture uses needles. Some of them vary in length between 13 to 130 mm with diameters ranging from 0.16 mm to 0.46 mm. Japanese acupuncture needles are usually thinner that Chinese acupuncture needles.
It should not be too thin to prevent breakage, although the blunter it is, the more the pain. Well-trained practitioners can pierce needles with no pain at all.
A lot of studies have been done so far to delve inside the vast wisdom in this ancient art. But if you feel like being close to the nature and its energies as known to ancient wise men, then you can try this medical art of piercing called acupuncture.
