Beverley Staunton Named March “Best Vocalist Of The Month" With Her Song "A More Beautiful Girl"

Beverley Staunton, a talented singer & songwriter based in Los Angeles, CA, has won the March SingerUniverse “Best Vocalist Of The Month” Competition, for her performance of her song “A More Beautiful Girl.” This is one of three songs that Staunton has recently written and recorded with veteran, producer/musician Cory Churko, (who has worked with Shania Twain, Alanis Morissette and others).

“A More Beautiful Girl” is a well crafted, modern rock-pop song which showcases Staunton’s clear, strong vocals. The song’s chorus has a harder-edged, rock arrangement a la Evanescence, and Staunton demonstrates that she has the energy and aggressiveness to sing the chorus convincingly. The demo is skillfully produced by Churko, who also played all of the music tracks on this recording.

Staunton grew up in Montreal, Canada, and began singing when she was 7. Her parents decided to form a family band (which included her three, older brothers), and called it The Staunton Family. They toured for several years around Quebec, with Staunton (who also played piano) and her brothers taking turns singing lead. They recorded three albums together, which mostly consisted of cover material.

When she was 14, Staunton moved with her parents to Los Angeles, where she attended the Hamilton Music Academy for three years. It was there that she developed her wide-ranging music skills, which included singing jazz, and performing musical theatre. Then after high school, she moved to Vancouver, where she built her career as a professional singer. “I did all types of singing work, including live gigs, jingles, demos, plus TV and film work,” explained Staunton. “I also sang backup vocals on Jessica Simpson’s first album, and Bette Midler’s latest album.” In addition, Staunton toured as backup singer with Nelly Furtado, which included many TV appearances.

In 2004, Staunton moved back to Los Angeles, where she now works as a pro singer. She acknowledged that doing a wide variety of genres (for her paid gigs) has made it difficult for her to focus on a singular style as an artist. “I’ve been a musical chameleon, singing everything from jazz, R&B, rock and country,” she said. “I’m (still) in the process of finding out who I am as an artist. But I’m excited about the rock songs I’ve written and recorded with Cory (Churko). I believe it’s a strong direction for me.”

Currently, Staunton & Churko are completing their third song together. Staunton then plans to release a 3-song CD, and shop it to labels. She also plans to perform these songs live with a band. If “A More Beautiful Girl’ (which was also runner-up in this month’s SongwriterUniverse “Best Song” contest) is any indication, Staunton has found a sound and style that successfully demonstrates her artist potential.

Jason Brown Named December “Best Vocalist Of The Month" With His Song "Sing & Play"

Jason Brown, a gifted vocalist and multi-instrumentalist based in San Diego, CA, has won the December SingerUniverse “Best Vocalist Of The Month” Competition, for his performance of his song “Sing & Play.” Brown adeptly sang and played all of the instruments on this recording, including alto saxophone, which is his main instrument. “Sing & Play” is the title track of his 10-song CD Sing & Play, which was released in November 2003. Brown is currently writing and recording songs for his follow-up album.

“Sing & Play” is a song which blends jazz, R&B and gospel, and it’s an excellent showcase for Brown’s vocals and his saxophone playing. Brown’s vocal performance combines the smooth jazz & scat style of an Al Jarreau, with the more intense, soulful edge of an Aaron Hall. The song itself is fairly simple, with its steady repetition of the key line, “All I wanna do, is sing & play for you.” The “you” Brown is singing to in this song is the Lord; Brown is a devout Christian who has sung and played gospel music since his childhood.

Brown was born in Los Angeles, then he moved with his parents to Harrisburg, PA when he was three. He started singing early on (from age 5) at church events, both as a solo singer, and in the choir. However, he suffered a tragedy when he was 13, when his father died, whom he was very close with. “I didn’t have any direction when my dad died,” recalled Brown. “So my grandmother and mother encouraged me to get into something to keep me occupied, and I chose music. I started to play saxophone, which I loved.”

Brown became so skilled at saxophone that when he was 16, his church suggested that he record an album playing sax. He subsequently recorded a solo, instrumental album called Jason’s Beginning. Then following high school, Brown started to perform live (mostly in jazz clubs) with several bands. He also learned to play additional instruments, including keyboards and guitar.

In 2003, Brown recorded and produced his Sing & Play album, which consists of half vocal songs, and half instrumental songs featuring his sax playing. The album has fared well, selling 1,500 copies, and helping to establish Brown as a popular live performer in Southern California. Since the album’s release, Brown has been offered the opportunity to perform at many events. A definite highlight was when he played (on sax) the national anthem this spring, in front of 37,000 people, at the new PETCO Park stadium in San Diego, before a San Diego Padre game. He was the first African-American to perform the anthem at PETCO Park.

Brown is continuing to build upon his success, and is currently recording his next album, which will be called Jason Brown ‘All Around Town’. Like its predecessor, the album will also consist of half vocal songs, and half instrumental songs. It is a testimony to his multiple skills as a musician, that he can create an album which showcases his equally impressive singing and saxophone playing.

Marlena Randall Named January “Best Vocalist Of The Month" With Her Song "Just To See You There"

Marlena Randall, a talented vocalist & songwriter based in Riverside, CA, has won the January SingerUniverse “Best Vocalist Of The Month” Competition, for her performance of her song “Just To See You There.” This song is one of 10 cuts included on her upcoming album, At Any Hour, which she will release independently next month (February 2005). Another song from her CD, “It Won’t Be Me,” was also named one of the Top 5 vocal performances of the month.

“Just To See You There” is a well written and produced pop ballad, which showcases Randall’s clear, powerful vocal performance. Later in the recording, the melody shifts into a higher key, which allows Randall’s vocals to adeptly soar into a higher range. In addition, the song’s lyrics are articulate and thoughtful, with Randall writing about a friend whom she cares deeply about.

Randall, 22, was born in San Bernardino, CA, and when she was 10, she moved with her family to Canyon Lake (near Riverside). She grew up in an active music environment, with both her father and grandmother being singers. “Music has always been a part of me,” explained Randall. “I decided when I was about 12, that I wanted to be a (professional) singer. I’ve gotten great encouragement and support from both my family and friends.”

During high school, Randall kept a busy schedule as a singer and stage performer. She did musical theater, sang solo at events and in the school choir, and was on the dance team. When she was 17, she entered the Miss America Pageant, and she became Miss West Riverside County. Two years later she entered again, and she reached a higher level, being named Miss Inland Empire. Randall has continued her education, and she is currently attending California Baptist University in Riverside, where she will graduate this May with a Bachelor's Degree in Music.

Randall has also developed her songwriting skills, and she has learned to play piano and guitar for writing purposes. Last summer (2004), she began recording her debut album with veteran producer/writer Josquin Des Pres at his Track Star Studios in San Diego. "I’m really excited to have finished my album, and Josquin has done a great job as producer,” said Randall. “There’s a good variety of songs on the CD. ‘Just To See You There’ is more pop, but many of the songs are more progressive rock, like Evanescence. With my songwriting, I wanted to make every song (and lyric) have a purpose, to make people think. Some of the themes are about society, eternity, people who are lost and hurting, having faith, and reaching out and helping people.”

2005 figures to be a promising year in Randall’s development as a successful singer & songwriter. When she graduates from college in May, she plans to aggressively promote her album, and regularly perform live with the new band she has formed. “I’m really looking forward to pushing my CD full-force,” she said, “and bringing my music to as many people as possible.”

Kelly Daye Wins First “Best Vocalist Of The Month" Competition With "Missing You"

Kelly Daye, a talented singer & songwriter based in Nashville, TN, has won the first SingerUniverse “Best Vocalist Of The Month” Competition, for her performance of “Missing You.” This is a new song which was written & produced by veteran writer/producer Tommy Farragher, who is based in New York City. “Missing You” is one of seven Farragher songs that Daye has recorded, and Daye’s performance of his song “I’m Doin’ Fine” was also named one of the Top Five vocal performances of the month.

“Missing You” is an intimate, haunting pop-rock ballad, which provides an excellent showcase for Daye’s clear, passionate vocals. Daye also expertly performs all the background vocal parts, and her multi-tracked harmonies create a rich vocal texture that helps create a powerful bridge and final chorus for this production.

Daye was born and raised in Baltimore, MD, and she began singing and performing live at a very young age. Her mother entered her into beauty pageants for girls, and her singing ability helped her excel in the talent segments. “I always loved singing – I performed anywhere anyone would let me sing,” recalled Daye. ‘I also sang in church, did talent shows, community theatre, and sang in the (well known) Peabody’s Children’s Choir. I was inspired by great singers in many genres, such as Pat Benatar, Celine Dion, Reba McEntire and Liz Phair. In addition, when I was in high school, I sang in several rock bands.”

Following high school, Daye started commuting to New York City (a four-hour drive), meeting songwriters and doing demo work. She eventually met hit writer/producer Tommy Farragher, who has worked with Taylor Dayne, Al Green and many others. They hit it off, and during the next year, Daye sang on seven of Farragher’s songs, including “Missing You,” which was recorded in January 2003. “It was great working with Tommy,” said Daye. “I learned a lot from him.”

Farragher discussed shopping Daye for a record deal, but Daye wanted to first develop her own songwriting skills before pursuing the label deal. “I felt I needed to work on my songwriting before putting myself out there as an artist,” explained Daye. “So I decided to move to Nashville (in April 2004), because I knew it would be a great place to meet and collaborate with songwriters and producers. Since I moved here, my songwriting has been going well, and I’ve also learned to play guitar. For many years (since she was a child), I had written lyrics, but it was great to finally put my words to music.”

Currently, Daye is looking forward to demoing her new songs, which have more of a rock edge. “I’m looking for a producer to work with, to help record my songs and collaborate on new ones,” said Daye. “I’m ready to do whatever it takes to get my music to the next level. If that means moving to New York or LA, that’s what I’ll do. I feel that I’m ready to get myself out there, both as a singer and a writer.”

Miranda Bentley Named December “Best Vocalist Of The Month" With Her Song "Hey You"

Miranda Bentley, an exceptional newcomer based in San Francisco, CA, has won the November SingerUniverse “Best Vocalist Of The Month” Competition, for her performance of “Hey You,” a song she co-wrote with writer/producer Rob Lederer. Bentley & Lederer are creative partners who have formed the music duo, named Miranda. “Hey You” is one of nine songs which they wrote for their debut CD (released earlier this year), and they are currently writing and recording songs for their second album.

"Hey You” is a midtempo, country/blues/rock number which is a very effective showcase for Bentley’s vocal performance. Her vocals are mixed high, which allows listeners to easily hear her clear, expressive vocals. Bentley’s singing on this cut is somewhat reminiscent of k.d.lang’s torch style, but she has developed her own, distinct sound.

Bentley was born and raised in Saskatchewan, Canada, which she describes as living “on the prairie.” She spent most of her adolescence living with her father, and they traveled extensively to Asia and Europe, where he would direct and produce plays. She began singing at a young age, and three of her favorite artists were Billie Holiday, Joni Mitchell and Sarah McLachlan.

Interestingly, she didn’t start performing live until she moved to San Francisco three years ago. “Most of my life I’ve been intensely shy,” Bentley explained. “It’s only been more recently that I’ve been performing onstage and also writing songs. Things started to come together when I met Rob (Lederer, who has worked with Steve Jenkins of Third Eye Blind and Dave Bryson of the Counting Crows), and we started playing live and writing. We’ve now written about 30 songs.” During the past two years, they have also performed regularly in the San Francisco area, including several shows at the Hotel Utah (a popular club for acoustic-rock artists).

Perla Batalla Named January “Best Vocalist Of The Month” With “If It Be Your Will”

Perla Batalla, a Grammy-nominated World music singer/songwriter based in Ojai, CA (near Santa Barbara), has won the January SingerUniverse “Best Vocalist Of The Month” Competition, for her rendition of “If It Be Your Will,” which was written by renowned singer/songwriter Leonard Cohen. This song is featured on Batalla’s 10-song album Bird On The Wire: The Songs Of Leonard Cohen, which she released independently in 2005.

“If It Be Your Will” is a classic song by Cohen (from his 1985 Various Positions album), and Batalla’s version of this ballad is graceful and heartfelt. This recording provides a fine showcase for Batalla’s clear, expressive vocals, and she demonstrates her ability to create a fresh new vocal interpretation of this Cohen song. Batalla also expertly produced this recording (she produces all her albums).

Batalla was born in Los Angeles and raised in Santa Monica, where she was introduced to music by her parents. “My musical roots were based in Mexican music, because my father was a Mexican immigrant who was also a Mariachi singer, and my mother was from South America,” she explained. “My early life was surrounded by Mexican music.”

Later on, Batalla went to study at the renowned Lee Strasberg Actors Studio in Hollywood, and she began earning a living as a professional singer by playing at many clubs throughout Southern California. It was during this period that she auditioned for Cohen, which led to her becoming his backup singer and touring extensively with him.

Cohen encouraged Batalla to pursue a solo career, and she subsequently signed a recording deal with Discovery/Warner Bros. Records, which released her debut album, Perla Batalla in 1994. Following this album, Batalla decided to become an independent recording artist, and all of her subsequent albums have been released on her own label.

Batalla’s album discography includes Mestiza (1998), Heaven and Earth (2000), Discoteca Batalla (2002), Bird On The Wire: The Songs Of Leonard Cohen (2005), and her most recent release, We Three Kings, which is a holiday-themed album that contains Christmas standards plus some non-traditional songs.

Currently, Batalla continues to tour and perform, both on her own and for tribute concerts and other collaborations. In addition, she is very excited about the Outreach social program that she’s involved in. “My mission is to really reach out to many children who have not been to a concert before [or exposed to much music],” explained Batalla. “Singing for thousands of kids really makes me happy. I sing to many children in Hispanic communities. I’m working a lot in New Mexico – I’m thinking of doing a documentary about the work I do.”

Jana Mashonee Named March “Best Vocalist Of The Month” With “A Change Is Gonna Come”

Jana Mashonee, a talented soul/R&B singer & writer based in Greenwich, CT, has won the March SingerUniverse “Best Vocalist Of The Month” Competition, for her performance of the Sam Cooke classic song, “A Change Is Gonna Come.” Mashonee will be independently releasing her third album, New Moon Born, next month (April 2009).

Mashonee’s rendition of “A Change Is Gonna Come” is faithful to the spirit of this ‘60s soul standard, yet it also impressively showcases her own powerful vocal style. This version starts out intimate and understated, then gradually builds in emotion and energy. Mashonee’s “A Change Is Gonna Come” also features guitarist Derek Miller (a Juno award winner), and a video has been made of this song.

Mashonee, who is of American Indian ancestry, grew up in Charlotte, NC, where she was first introduced to music by her father (who is a singer and drummer). She started to play piano when she was seven, and began performing as a singer during her high school years. Mashonee subsequently attended and later graduated from Davidson College, a prominent liberal arts school in Charlotte.

Soon after graduating, Mashonee signed with Curb Records and released a single. However, she left Curb and focused more on her own songwriting. “After Davidson (and Curb), I wanted to take a personal journey, and I decided to move to the New York area,” explained Mashonee, “It was there that I met Stephan Galfas, who has become my writing collaborator, co-producer, and my manager.” Galfas is known for his work with Cher, Kool & The Gang, George Clinton and E.L.O.

Mashonee has previously released two albums: American Indian Christmas (in 2005) and American Indian Story (2007). Notably, American Indian Story was nominated for a Grammy award, for Best American Indian Album. And both of these album have won NAMMYs (Native American Music Awards).

Currently, Mashonee is about to release her third album, New Moon Born, which marks a new direction for her. The songs (and lyrics) are more mainstream pop, with less emphasis on Native American themes. “My new album is in a more pop direction, although my music will always have that Native American spirit in me,” she said.

In addition to promoting her new album, Mashonee will be touring steadily, performing shows with her band and playing solo. She also is beginning to pursue acting – she recently starred in an independent film named Raptor Ranch, which will be released later this year. “Music definitely remains my priority, but I there are a couple good possibilities in movies coming up.”

Jessica Erin Named April “Best Vocalist Of The Month” With “I Can't Let You Go”

Jessica Erin, a promising country/pop singer & writer based in Los Angeles, CA (originally from Illinois), has won the April SingerUniverse “Best Vocalist Of The Month” Competition, for her performance of the new song, “I Can’t Let You Go” (written by Guy Walker). This song is featured on her debut 11-song album Free To Be Me, which she released independently in October 2007.

“I Can’t Let You Go” is a very commercial, radio-ready ballad which provides a fine showcase for Erin’s clear, expressive vocals. This song is well crafted – it features a big pop chorus and strong bridge section. This recording was expertly produced by Billy Chapin & Chris Omartian, and features solid music tracks by Guy Walker (lead guitar) and renowned producer/musician Michael Omartian (piano and organ).

Erin was born and raised in a small town named LaSalle, which is in Illinois (southwest of Chicago). She was inspired early on by listening to such artists as Celine Dion, Martina McBride and Christina Aguilera. During high school, she was chosen for the All-District Choir. Erin has also won other accolades for her singing, such as first place in the Tri-County Fair for an acoustic performance, first in team singing for the International Modeling and Talent Association (IMTA), and she was a finalist in Fashion Rock’s female vocalist competition.

Following high school, she pursued her music career fulltime and subsequently recorded her debut album Free To Be Me, with producers Billy Chapin & Chris Omartian. “It was great working with Billy and Chris, and I love ‘I Can’t Let You Go,’ which was written by my lead guitar player, Guy Walker.” The album was recorded in both Nashville and Edgewater, FL. Notably, Erin co-wrote three songs on her album: “Girls Night Out,” “Say Goodbye” and “Bad Girl.”

Erin has been actively promoting her album, marketing her music online at iTunes CDBaby, and on her own sites. In addition, she has recently performed live at several top clubs in Los Angeles, and she just performed at a Navy Seals benefit concert in San Diego, which was sponsored by 105.3 radio station and Dirtbag clothing. Erin has previously opened shows for the BoDeans, Darryl Worley and Montgomery Gentry.

Currently, Erin is shopping for a label deal, and she’s hoping to secure a slot opening a tour for prominent country artist. Erin has also written several songs for her next album project, and she’s looking for collaborators to write additional songs to complete the album.

Joelle Named May “Best Vocalist Of The Month” With His Song, “Natural Beauty”

Joelle, a promising pop/rock singer & writer based in Calgary, AB, Canada, has won the May SingerUniverse “Best Vocalist Of The Month” Competition, for her performance of the new song, “Natural Beauty” (written by Jim Sells & Don Somerville). This song is featured on her second album Pillar Of Stone, which she released independently in 2008.

“Natural Beauty” is a very appealing, pop/AC ballad which provides an excellent showcase for Joelle’s clear, expressive vocals. Joelle has selected a fine song to record – “Natural Beauty” has a positive, romantic theme with descriptive, heartfelt lyrics. This song was skillfully produced by Chris Omartian, who co-wrote eight of the songs on Joelle’s album. The recording also features Grammy-winning producer Michael Omartian on piano, plus music tracks by several top Nashville studio musicians,

Joelle (whose last name is Persram) grew up in St. Albert, AB, which is a small town northwest of Edmonton. She began singing in public when she was eight, and she also started writing songs early on. During high school, she joined a prominent choir called the Youth Singers Of Calgary, which performed regionally and overseas (including Australia). Joelle also entered local talent contests and fared well – she won a trip to Las Vegas, and received airplay by winning a radio station contest.

Following college (she studied music at North American Baptist College in Edmonton), Joelle began pursuing her music career. She has recorded two full albums – Look At Me Now (2003) and her latest CD, Pillar Of Stone. Joelle co-wrote three of the songs on this album, which she recorded in Nashville, “I commuted from Calgary to Nashville to record Pillar Of Stone,” she explained. ‘I loved working with Chris Omartian, who is brilliant and has an amazing ear. And it was great co-writing with Chris, Jim Sells and Don Somerville.”

Prior to the album’s release in Canada, Joelle released the title track “Pillar Of Stone” as a single in the U.S. Impressively, the song reached #36 on the Radio & Records Top 40 CHR chart. Joelle is now considering releasing “Natural Beauty” as her next single, and she’s already filmed a video of this song.

In addition to promoting her music at radio, Joelle is also planning a media press tour, while building a strong internet presence. Notably, she has formed a band (with six musicians) which plays regularly around Calgary. “I hope to tour with my band later this year,” she said. Joelle is currently handling her own management, although she does receive guidance from a management company.

Derek Adams Named June “Best Vocalist Of The Month” With His Song, “Said Too Much”

Derek Adams, a promising pop/R&B singer & writer based in Boston, MA, has won the June SingerUniverse “Best Vocalist Of The Month” Competition, for his performance of his song, “Said Too Much” (co-written by Cameell Hanna). This song will be included on his upcoming EP, which he will release independently this fall.

“Said Too Much” is an appealing, soulful pop ballad which has multi-layered harmonies a la the Backstreet Boys. This song has a relaxed, easy-going feeling which is pleasant to listen to. “Said Too Much” provides a fine showcase for Adams’ expressive lead vocals, and demonstrates his ability to record sophisticated background harmonies. This song was skillfully produced by Cameell Hanna, who also played most of the music tracks on this recording.

Adams grew up in Monroe, Connecticut (near Bridgeport), where he was inspired by listening to such artists as John Legend, Lionel Richie and Stevie Wonder. He started performing in musical theater productions in fifth grade, and he continued to sing & act in shows through high school. Adams also started to write songs when he was in seventh grade.

When he was a high school senior, Adams entered the 98Q Radio “Idol Search” statewide competition. He won the grand prize, which led to Adams opening for pop star Jesse McCartney on his 2006 Beautiful Soul tour. Adams was also a finalist in Star 99.9 Radio’s “Star Idol” Competition.

For college, Adams is currently attending Northeastern University in Boston, where he is a Communications major. It was in Boston that he met producer Cameel Hanna, and they began recording together at Sanctum Sound Studio, where Hanna works. “I started recording my demo at Sanctum during my freshman year,” recalled Adams. “I presented my music to Cameel, and he jumped on the project. Cameel is an excellent producer and musician.”

In addition to completing his EP project, Adams is continuing to develop his songwriting skills. He is pleased about his writing collaborations with pro writer Sam Brodie. “We’ve been co-writing a lot of songs, and we’re pitching them to label artists,” he said.

Adams has also formed a band this year, and he’s been playing local clubs and benefit shows in the Boston area. “My main priority is to build up a fan base with college students, and to play more shows,” said Adams. “I’m looking for a manager and agent right now, and eventually I’d love to hook up with a publisher to get more placements.”

Jimmy Lehoux, a talented country artist based in Manchester, New Hampshire, has won the September SingerUniverse “Best Vocalist Of The Month” Competition, for his performance of the song “Even When It Rains” (written by Tony Martin). "Even When It Rains" will be included on his upcoming album, Thirteen, which will be released at the end of this year or in early 2011.

“Even When It Rains” is graceful, midtempo ballad which has a classic country feel reminiscent of George Strait and Randy Travis. This song has an easy-going style which is pleasant to listen to, and it provides a fine showcase for Lehoux's rich, soulful vocal performance. "Even When It Rains" was expertly produced by Tom McBee of Nashville, who produced all the songs on Lehoux's album.

Lehoux was born and raised in Manchester, NH. When he was nine, he started to perform as a lead singer in church, and he also learned to play guitar. Lehoux was inspired by listening to such favorite artists as George Strait, Kenny Rogers and Ronnie Milsap. "Even though I grew up in New England, I knew early on I loved country music and wanted to sing and write country songs," recalled Lehoux.

Following high school, Lehoux attended Rivier College in New Hampshire for three years, but he then decided to focus fulltime on his music career. In 1999 he recorded his first album Born On The Tracks, and he moved to Nashville in 2000 to develop his songwriting and establish contacts. However, in 2003, he and his wife Kate decided to move back to Manchester to start a family.

"I still commuted back-and-forth many times to Nashville, and things picked up in 2006 when I met producer Tom McBee," explained Lehoux. "Tom and I started to work together on an album, and we decided that this album would feature great new songs by top Nashville writers. So we were able to get terrific songs by such A-List writers as Brett James, Ken Bell, Tony Martin and Liz Miller."

Lehoux's new album Thirteen has now been completed and is ready for release. However, due to interest from some major labels, Lehoux and his manager Gary Crane (of Capital Productions) are currently deciding whether to release this album independently or via a major label.

In the meantime, Lehoux continues to perform steadily with his longtime band (Scot Gibbs, guitar; Greg Gagne, drummer; Vinnie Marisola; fiddle & steel guitar; Jared Williams, bass & vocals; and Al Gagnon, keyboards). The band has opened for many stars, including Charlie Daniels, Alabama, Little Feat, Marshall Tucker Band, Phil Vassar and LeAnn Rimes. Notably, Lehoux & band also opened up for Kenny Chesney at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, MA.

AJ Sarcione Named October “Best Vocalist Of The Month” With His Song “Breaking Point”

AJ Sarcione, a talented pop//urban/soul singer & writer based in Los Angeles, CA, has won the October SingerUniverse “Best Vocalist Of The Month” Competition, for his performance of his song, “Breaking Point” (co-written by Dylan Lloyd). Sarcione is currently writing and recording several new songs for his upcoming album project.

“Breaking Point” is a soulful, contemporary pop ballad which is well produced, and already sounds ready for radio airplay. This song provides an excellent showcase for Sarcione's impressive vocal performance. In the first verse, Sarcione starts singing with an understated approach, and then he gradually builds to a passionate, stirring vocal performance later in the song. "Breaking Point" was produced by Kevin Savigar, who is known for co-writing & producing several hit songs for Rod Stewart, including "Forever Young" and "Young Turks."

Sarcione grew up in New Hampshire, and for high school he attended the Walnut Hill School for the Arts near Boston, where he studied classical voice. During this period Sarcione performed at the Alice Tully Hall in New York City (at the Lincoln Center). In addition, while he in the audience at a Whitney Houston concert, he was invited onstage by Houston to sing with her. Sarcione said Houston, along with Ella Fitzgerald and Boyz II Men, were three of his biggest musical influences.

For college, Sarcione attended the University of Miami, but he decided to leave school early to focus on his music career. He had the opportunity to meet Mya and sing onstage with her, which led to Mya introducing Sarcione to producers and labels. However, he decided he wasn't quite ready as an artist, so he returned to U. of Miami and subsequently graduated with a Bachelor's degree.

Sarcione then moved to Los Angeles, where he worked as a publicist for MTV and other entertainment companies. However, in 2009 he decided to seriously pursue his artist career again. In the past year he's written & recorded 10 new songs, including "Breaking Point," and a dance/funk song called "Rochambeau." Sarcione has created an unique, stylish video of "Rochambeau," which has been viewed 17,000 times on YouTube. Also in December 2009, Sarcione sang the National Anthem at the Staples Center before a Lakers game.

Currently, Sarcione is recording more songs with Kevin Savigar, and he's collaborating with other writer/producers. "Kevin has been great to work with--we really hit it off," said Sarcione. "I like how we brought in a gospel choir to sing on 'Breaking Point'. I'm looking forward to working with Kevin and other producers. We're putting together songs for my recording project, to present to labels. We're also booking more live shows; I'm really looking forward to performing these new songs live."

Aaron Pritchett Named November “Best Vocalist Of The Month” With His Song “Coming Clean”

Aaron Pritchett, a popular country artist based in Vancouver, BC, Canada, has won the November SingerUniverse “Best Vocalist Of The Month” Competition, for his performance of his song “Coming Clean” (co-written by Jessie Sherk & Willie Mack). "Coming Clean" is included on Pritchett's new album, In The Driver's Seat, which he is releasing this month on his label, Decibel Records.

“Coming Clean” is a well-written, uptempo country/rock song which provides a fine showcase for Pritchett's strong, expressive lead & harmony vocals. The song starts off with an acoustic guitar-based track, and then builds to a full-band sound in the chorus. The recording also features an excellent, electric guitar solo (by Darren Savard) which gives the song a rocking edge. "Coming Clean" was expertly produced by Tom McKillip and mixed by Kevin Churko.

Pritchett was born in Vancouver, and grew up in a small town called Kitimat in Northern British Columbia. He was inspired by listening to such artists as John Mellencamp, Bryan Adams and Elvis Presley. Following high school, he entered several country music competitions, and he became the regional winner and performed at the Canadian finals in Hamilton, Ontario.

Then in 2001, Pritchett entered a major competition called Project Discovery, which was sponsored by CMT (Country Music Television) in Canada. He won this nationwide competition, and followed it up with the release of his debut album, Consider This, in 2002. This album did well and Pritchett began having a long run of Canadian country hits & videos.

Travis Peery Named December “Best Vocalist Of The Month” With His Song “The Wrong Girl”

Travis Peery, a promising rock/soul singer & writer based in Los Angeles, CA, has won the December SingerUniverse “Best Vocalist Of The Month” Competition, for his performance of his song “The Wrong Girl”. This song is included on Peery's 10-song album, Idea Of A Girl, which he released independently in December 2009.

“The Wrong Girl” is a mainstream, midtempo rock song which provides a fine showcase for Peery's strong, soulful lead & harmony vocals. Peery's vocal performance builds nicely throughout this song, from an understated approach in the first verse & chorus, to his powerful lead vocals and harmonies by the bridge and final chorus. On "The Wrong Girl" Peery plays guitar and organ, and he produced this song at D.M. Gremlin Studios in Long Beach. It was recorded, mixed & mastered by studio owner Wendy Levin.

Peery was born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area (north of the city in Marin County). He learned to play guitar and piano, and was inspired by listening to such favorite artists as the Rolling Stones, Al Green and Gavin DeGraw. Following high school, he attended Claremont McKenna College (in Southern California), where he subsequently graduated in 2005 with majors in both Government and Legal Studies.

It was also during college that Peery formed his first band, called Double Stamp. At first the group mainly performed covers, but as Peery's songwriting developed, he began to perform his own songs with them. In 2007 Double Stamp released their album Hand Tighten Only, which featured Peery's original material.

Then in 2009, Peery began working on his solo album, Idea Of A Girl. "I recorded the album over an eight-month period, working with Wendy Levin and two members of Double Stamp (bassist Daniel Herring & drummer Greg Blair), who played on the sessions," explained Peery.

Following the release of Idea Of A Girl, Peery has been promoting the album online (it's available via iTunes and Amazon), and he's been playing many live gigs. "I've been playing shows in L.A. at the Viper Room, House Of Blues, The Joint and The Mint," he said. I have a new band which includes Dave Messer on drums and Francis Breidenbach on bass. I'm also continuing to write songs, and eventually I'll record another album."

Malea McGuinness, a talented pop/rock singer/songwriter based in Los Angeles, CA, has won the SingerUniverse “Best Vocalist Of The Month” Competition for January, for her song “Memories.” This song is included on McGuinness' second album, Close As Air, which she released independently in April 2010.

“Memories” is a heartfelt, mainsteam pop/AC ballad which provides a fine showcase for McGuinness' expressive, soulful vocal performance. This recording features a full musical arrangement, featuring string tracks and background vocal harmonies. "Memories" was produced by Jamie Candiloro at Sunset Sound Studios in Los Angeles. Candiloro is a prominent producer/engineer who has worked with Ryan Adams, Willie Nelson and R.E.M.

McGuinness was born in Fort Hood, Texas, and then she moved with her grandparents to Long Island, NY (her father served in the Green Beret armed forces). She learned to play guitar and piano, and she was inspired by listening to such favorite artists as the Beatles, Sting and Linda Ronstadt. For college, McGuinness attended tha Manhattan School of Music, where she majored in Vocal Performance (classical & opera).

Following college, McGuinness decided to move to Los Angeles to pursue her music career. She started to attend songwriter circle events and began performing live. In 2006 she wrote & recorded her first album, True Believer. Then last year (2009), McGuinness began working on her second album Close As Air, with producer Michael Patterson. "I met Michael through a musician friend," recalled McGuinness. "I played him my songs, and he wound up re-recording these songs for me and it turned out great. We also worked together on my single 'Spinning,' and we'll be working more together."

Since the release of Close As Air in April, McGuinness and her manager Doug Kaplan have been busy promoting her album and touring. They released "Spinning," which has attracted AAA airplay nationally. McGuinness has also been touring steadily in several states (mostly in the West and Midwest), and she has opened shows for the Counting Crows (at the Summerfest Music Festival in Milwaukee, in front of 10,000 people), Shawn Colvin and Toad The Wet Sprocket. Notably, she was also the opening artist for Kenny Loggins for seven shows on his recent tour, and she will be opening four more shows for Loggins this March. McGuinness will also be opening a show in February for rock band Vertical Horizon.

In addition to her touring, McGuinness has also been focusing on her songwriting, and collaborating with other writers. "I went to Nashville and wrote with (hit songwriter) Gary Burr and other songwriters," said McGuinness. 'It was a great experience co-writing in Nashville

Emily Mure Named February “Best Vocalist Of The Month” With Her Song “Don't Lock The Front Door”

Emily Mure, a promising folk/pop singer & songwriter based in New York City, has won the February SingerUniverse “Best Vocalist Of The Month” Competition, for her performance of her song “Don't Lock The Front Door.” This song is included on her 12-song debut album Where I Began, which she released independently in December 2009.

“Don't Lock The Front Door” is an appealing folk/pop tune which has a very sparse instumentation--just vocals and acoustic guitar. But it provides a fine showcase for Mure's expressive, graceful vocal performance, which is reminiscent of Norah Jones' style. Notably, Mure played guitar and also produced this song, which was recorded by Mike Presta at The Engine Room studio in Manhattan.

Mure grew up on Roosevelt Island (which is part of Manhattan), and her grandfather and father were both professional musicians who introduced her to music. She was also inspired by listening to such favorite artists as Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan and Ani DeFranco. Interestingly, the first instrument Mure learned was oboe, and she studied oboe while attending the LaGuardia High School for the Performing Arts. Impressively, during her high school period she performed with a woodwind quintet at Avery Fisher Hall, and with an orchestra at Carnegie Hall.

For college, Mure attended Ithaca College (in central NY state), where she majored in Music and minored in Psychology. However, it was during college that she decided to focus on folk and Celtic music instead of classical. In the summer following her sophomore year, Mure studied Irish Celtic music at the University of Limerick in Ireland. In fact, she loved Ireland so much that after graduating from college, she moved to Galway, Ireland for six months, where she earned her living as a street musician. Also during this time in Ireland, she wrote several of the songs which would appear on her debut album, Where I Began.

Upon her return to New York in 2007, Mure performed live steadily (at such venues as Rockwood Music Hall, The Living Room, Union Hall and Arlene's Grocery), and she prepared to record her album, for which she wrote all the songs. "I started to record the album in May 2009, and it was recorded over the next few months," Mure recalled. "It was released that December (2009)."

Following the album's release, Mure has promoted the album online, and by playing many shows around New York, sometimes as a solo performer, in a trio (with oboe & cello), or with a full band. "I'm continuing to promote my album, playing local gigs and several festivals," she said. "I would also like to do a Northeast tour, and a Southern tour." In addition, Mure has been writing songs for her next album, which she will start recording later this year.

Luella Named March “Best Vocalist Of The Month” With “Not Thinking About You”

Luella, a talented country/soul singer & writer based in Brisbane, QLD, Australia, has won the March SingerUniverse “Best Vocalist Of The Month” Competition, for her performance of the song, “Not Thinking About You” (written by Chaise Flanders & Mary Loving). This song is featured on her new album titled Yes, which she will release independently in April (2011).

“Not Thinking About You” is a soulful, bluesy song which is in the vein of strong ballads by Bonnie Tyler and Tina Turner. This song provides a terrific showcase for Luella’s powerful, expressive vocal performance. The song starts off gently with a piano intro, and then gradually builds in emotion and intensity. "Not Thinking About You" was expertly produced by Michael Flanders & Robert Mackay of Pacific International Music (which has studios in Nashville and in Queensland, Australia).

Luella (whose full name is Luella Widt) was born in the small town of of Collinsville in North Queensland. She began singing publicly at age 13, and when she was 15 she learned to play guitar. Luella was inspired by listening to such favorite artists as Bonnie Raitt, Reba McEntire, and Melissa Etheridge. As a teenager, she entered and won talent contests in Queensland and New South Wales. Luella also formed a band and began earning income playing live gigs.

After high school, Luella moved to Brisbane to pursue her professional music career. In just a few months she won an audition to become lead singer of the Blue Heler Band (now called the Heelers). This gave Luella the opportunity to perform at major live venues throughout Australia. She has also sung at music festivals, corporate events, rodeos and various conferences.

In 2006, Luella released her first album, the self-titled Luella, which included the single "Tonight." Then in 2008, she released an EP called Shake The Ground, which produced by Louis Shelton (known for his work with Lionel Richie, Seals and Crofts, and Art Garfunkel).

It was in 2010 that Luella recorded her new album Yes, for which she wrote six of the ten songs. "Recording this album has been such fantastic journey, with such truly talented musicians taking part," said Luella. "[For example] Steve Brewster (whose credits include Faith Hill and Bob Seger) played drums, and Tammy Rogers King (Emmylou Harris, Reba McEntire) played mandolin."

With the release in April of her new album, Luella is looking forward to promoting it and building her radio and internet presence. "We hope to get a single onto the airways in early May, and we plan on making film clips [and try to get] airtime on the prominent music channels," she said. "Also, we will have the album active on as many of the internet sites as possible

Kenya Named April “Best Vocalist Of The Month” With “Who's Crying Now”

Kenya, a talented soul/jazz/pop singer & writer based in Chicago, IL, has won the April SingerUniverse “Best Vocalist Of The Month” Competition, for her performance of Journey's hit ballad, “Who's Crying Now” (written by Jonathan Cain & Steve Perry). This song is featured on her debut EP, Starting Over, which she released independently last June (2010).

Kenya's recording of “Who's Crying Now” is unique and soulful; she definitely makes the song her own. The song starts off with an elegant, piano-based arrangement, and subtly builds emotion with the addition of drums and string tracks. Kenya's vocal performance is expressive and heartfelt. "Who's Crying Now" was expertly produced by Larry Sturm, a prominent engineer/mixer/producer who is also the President of the Chicago Chapter of The Recording Academy.

Kenya (whose full name is Kenya McGuire Johnson) was born and raised in Denver, CO. She first learned to play flute, and then she started playing piano when she was 13. Kenya was inspired by listening to such favorite artists as Stevie Wonder, Donny and Lalah Hathaway, and Bobby McFerrin. During high school, she performed the lead in several musical theater productions, including The Wiz and West Side Story.

For college, Kenya attended Howard University in Washington, D.C., where she majored in Physical Therapy. Impressively, Kenya not only graduated with a Bachelor's Degree at Howard, but she went on to get her Master's Degree at Trinity University. It was also during college that Kenya began to write songs, and she sang and toured with the Howard Gospel Choir.

After completing her education, Kenya made the decision to focus on her career as a physical therapist, getting married and starting a family. As a result, she took a hiatus from music & performing for several years. However, it was in 2008 that she began focusing again on music. "I wanted to get back into music," explained Kenya. "I took a music theory class at a community college, and started getting back into a musical groove. I then had a chance to meet and work with producer Maurice Joshua (who won a Grammy Award for his remix of Beyonce's hit "Crazy Love"). We hit it off, and he produced four songs on my EP. I've also been working with a top vocal coach, Lyndia Johnson."

Now with the release of her EP (which includes her own compositions "Starting Over" and "Never The Less"), Kenya is excited about further establishing her music career. She has been building her internet profile, and her EP is available on iTunes, Amazon and other sites. She has also been performing gigs regularly in the Chicago area.

"This year I definitely want to perform more; I'm submitting my music to festivals to get exposure," she said. "Also, I'm continuing to write more songs, and I hope to record a full CD later this year."

Rehya Stevens Named May “Best Vocalist Of The Month” With Her Song “Baby, Goodbye”

Rehya Stevens, a mainstream pop/R&B singer & songwriter based in Los Angeles, has won the May SingerUniverse “Best Vocalist Of The Month” Competition, for her performance of her song “Baby, Goodbye" (co-written by Carmen Grillo). This recording is the song's demo version; Stevens will be recording a master version of "Baby, Goodbye" that will be included on her upcoming debut album Vintage Love, which will be released this fall.

“Baby, Goodbye” is a traditional soul/blues ballad, which is in the vein of classic artists like Etta James. This song provides a good showcase for Stevens' powerful, stirring vocals. Her vocal performance starts off in a more understated way, and then slowly builds in emotion and intensity. This demo version was capably produced by Stevens & co-writer Carmen Grillo, and features Stevens playing keyboards and Grill playing guitar.

Stevens was born in Pasadena, CA (near Los Angeles), and when she was eight she moved north with her family to Sacramento. Stevens began singing at a young age, and by age 15 she had learned to play piano and had started writing songs. Growing up, she was inspired by listening to such favorite artists as Carole King, Aretha Franklin and Karen Carpenter.

By high school, Stevens was already performing live regularly, including playing jazz festivals and other gigs with her father, who was a jazz/R&B keyboardist. For college, she attended Sacramento State University, and then she moved back to Southern California to study at the Musician's Institute in Hollywood. It was also during this period that she recorded a six-song EP.

During the past few years, Stevens has earned a living as a professional singer, doing many studio sessions (jingles, commercials) plus performing live with a big band for corporate events and other shows. She has been the featured vocalist in commercials for Mattel and Banana Boat suntan lotion, and she sang the theme song for the TV show, Scott Baio...45 & Single.

Stevens has also developed her skills as a songwriter. "I've been building my song catalog, with over 40 songs," said Stevens. "I've been able to place my songs in TV shows such as Hawthorne (on TNT) and The Rememberer on CBS."

Currently, Stevens is working on her first, full-fledged album release, which will be called Vintage Love. "I'm excited about writing and recording the songs for this album," she said. "I will be writing with some great writers for the album, like Jennifer Adan (who co-wrote the hit "She Wouldn't Be Gone" for Blake Shelton) and Gardner Cole (who co-wrote hits for Madonna and Jody Watley).

Dillon Dixon Named June “Best Vocalist Of The Month” With His Song “The Ways Of Your Changing Heart”

Dillon Dixon, a talented acoustic pop/country singer & songwriter based in Nashville, TN, has won the June SingerUniverse “Best Vocalist Of The Month” Competition, for his performance of his song “The Ways Of Your Changing Heart” (co-written by Stephen Dorff). This song was originally written and pitched to Natalie Cole (she recorded it but it was not released); Dixon has since recorded this new version which will be included on his own artist project.

“The Ways Of Your Changing Heart” is a graceful, adult contemporary ballad, which provides a fine showcase for Dixon's clear, expressive vocals. The song has a beautiful chorus melody, which allows Dixon's vocals to shine, and it creates an emotional lift. "The Ways Of Your Changing Heart" is a well produced recording, featuring solid music tracks and an appealing string arrangement.

Dixon was born in North Carolina, and then grew up in Denver, CO. Several of his family members were singers and musicians who encouraged his music development. Dixon was also inspired by listening to such favorite artists as James Taylor, Sting and Phil Collins. When he was a teenager, he learned how to play guitar and drums, and he started writing songs.

Following high school, Dixon first attended Colorado State University, and he also joined the prominent singing group, Up With People. He toured with the group extensively, playing shows throughout the U.S. and Europe. Then a friend (in the group) recommended that Dixon attend the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA. He subsequently graduated from Berklee with a Bachelor's Degree in Professional Music.

After Berklee, Dixon moved to New York City for two years, before deciding to move to Nashville and establish his music career there. Since then, Dixon has become a successful pro songwriter and performer. As a writer, Dixon co-wrote a hit song for country star Steve Holy called "Put Your Best Dress On," and he's had over 20 cuts with such artists as George Jones, Restless Heart, Rodney Atkins and Neal McCoy. Dixon's songs have also been placed in several hit movies, including Scream, Terminator 3, Live Free And Die Hard, and Flight Of The Phoenix.

As a performer, Dixon fronts his band, the Dillon Dixon Band, which performs and tours steadily. This summer the band will be playing shows in Kentucky, New York, Denver and Los Angeles.

Notably, Dixon has a song called "Chip Away" which is featured on a compilation album called Teddy Gentry's Best New Nashville on Cracker Barrel Records. (Gentry is a member of platinum country band, Alabama). In addition, Dixon will be flying to Austria to work with producer Christian Seitz, and he will be working with U.K. producer, Stuart Epps.
