Collar Bone Piercing - Are you bad to the bone?
- Posted by Pete Bogdanovich
In this article we are going to go deep as in bone collar deep. In my recent articles where I talked about various places and forms of body piercing, all were pretty much common and mostly pain-free to get done. Well collar bone piercings are on a whole different level compared to other forms of piercings.
Collar bone piercing is a type of surface piercing that goes along your own collar bones located in your upper chest area. There are two variations of collar bone piercing that can be done. The first one is rather simple for the piercer and the one getting pierced; it is a microdermal piercing in essence. Not going to go in detail on it as all the info on it you can read in one of my pervious articles on microdermals or you can check out this community’s blog for further info on it.
This article will be about the second variety of collar bone piercing. The one were the piercing actually passes underneath the collarbone, penetrating you inner body in the process. Due to that it is the deepest surface piercing that can be performed today. This trend of body piercing is fairly new; in fact it is so new that some piercers avoid doing it since they lack the experience in anatomy and steady hands. It is of upmost importance that you seek out piercers that have a greater understanding of our anatomy and a set of steady experienced hands. Preparation before the piercing include sterilizing the chest area and also determining the piercing points on either side of the collarbone, best to do it at the center of the clavicle. Here is where the piercer’s knowledge of anatomy is crucial as he has to roughly estimate the clavicle size and by it determine the right surface bar or barbell length. Usually it comes down to about three inches but it isn’t a general rule since we are all different and own body’s bones are different as well.
The piercer then proceeds with the pierce needle sewing it from the one end of the collarbone going underneath it, ending up on the other end where the jewelry will get etched. The procedure is quite painful for people cause as I said it is the deepest surface piercing to date. Risks of damaging an artery or a nerve are a real possibility and your own body tends to reject it as a foreign object so that also has to be taken into consideration.
The jewelry choices are pretty much set on strictly using bio-compatible types of material such as PTFE (Teflon) and nothing else. Piercers that know there trade will try and do the collar bone (clavicle) piercing as quick as possible to make the customer feel as little pain as possible. The other clavicle is usually done at the same time. Reading this you notice that everything about clavicle piercings is extreme, this also comes into play when considering the price tag for such a piercing. At a cost between 100$ to 150$(depending on the studios) it set itself also apart from other piercings as rather expensive.
What also needs to be said is that collar bone piercings are rather prone to scaring that can result in limiting of mobility and can get ugly in the long run. Reason for that is again cause of the deep wound since the surface wound heals normally, but the inside requires a lot of effort from or own body to generate new skin tissue (fistula). Complications resulting from that a cause the most common risk associated with collar bone piercing and that is rejection, so same basic rules apply like in most piercings KEEP IT SAFE, KEEP IT CLEAN.
