Common Body Piercing Problems

Common Body Piercing Problems

  • Posted by piercing
If you have ever experienced piercing then you would know that though it is not very painful, but requires a lot of care afterwards for a few weeks. You need to take proper care of it because bacteria definitely attack the piercing. Here in this article you would find all the problems that are associated to piercing and how to look after piercing.
Over cleaning:
Always avoid cleaning with a harsh cleanser as it would tender the skin and your skin surface would irritate. The piercing usually releases a puss liquid so using a cleanser directly may harm your skin. However it would be better if you dilute the cleanser with water to form a think solution of the cleanser and then apply it gently. It is a good thing to clean the piercing at least once a day but do not start worrying about it too much. Obviously touching the pierced area again and again may cause infection to your skin. Not only this, but it can also make the skin raw allowing more and more infections to get inside the pierced area.

Infections:
Infections are very common with the fresh piercing. Fungi and bacteria attack the skin to cause it infection. Although human white blood cells defend the body, specifically the pierced area. Having swelling, pain, redness and discharge of thick brown or green puss is common, however it would help you if you can compress it a bit, but it can be only done in the early stage. Always keep a check on the pierced area, and if you think that bacteria are there, then use anti- bacterial cream. This is easily available on medical stores and not expensive either.
Another important thing that one needs to keep in mind is not to remove the jewelry. If you remove jewelry this would give way to bacteria to enter inside your body and from there it can travel anywhere inside the body, infecting the tissues and organs of the body. If you get into any serious problem then please don’t try to resolve it on your own and consult your doctor or nurse who are expert in cleaning the wounds. It is a simple healing process that takes time, but obviously you need to take care of it.

Metal Hypersensitivity:
Sensitivity is another issue that people usually have. Many are sensitive to nickel. For the past few years this issue has become even more common. This is mainly because the metals used in the body piercing are not pure. The best thing is to use a hypoallergenic metal for piercing even if you are not allergic from metals. They avoid damaging your skin, resulting to fast the healing process. It is better to ask the body piercer about any metal sensitivity that you possess prior to start piercing.
There are people who don’t even know if they have metal hypersensitivity. Even if don’t know, still it is the responsibility of the piercer to raise the question of sensitivity. People, who react when wearing watches, buttons on jeans or belt-buckets, can suppose to have nickel allergy. However, it is nothing dangerous and quite common in people. If you have pierced and the skin becomes itchy, red, dry or sore than its better to return to the piercer and ask him to change the jewelry to a biocompatible metal.

Migration:
When we mean migration in terms piercing, we refer the skin to settle into a different position. In piercing, skin usually settles into a different place from where it is pierced. It does not mean that the piercing would move on entire body to settle on a specific position. It simply means that it would shift a few millimeters away from its original location. It is also known as “parking”. Either it happens to those who are metal allergic or those who are wearing huge and heavy jewelry, increasing the elasticity of the skin.
One of the best examples of this would be the navel piercing, where if the has little space in navel to wear the jewelry. In this case it would become difficult for the piercing to heal due to the stress that jewelry would have on the pierced area. If it occurs with you then don’t wait at home, visit the piercer and ask for more comfortable size and well shaped jewelry.

Scarring:
It is rare for the skin to heal while exactly matching the surrounding tissue. It usually heals in different thickness, in different ways for different people, and forming different type of scarring for different type of damage. Any piercing that has been worn for years will leave a scar if it were removed.
Many people shock once they know that their skin would not heal to match the original surrounding area of the skin. It also depends upon the skin, as every person has a skin different from the other, so it may react differently. It is better and wise to get your skin examined before attempting to have your skin pierced. However these scars are very little to be hardly ever noticed by anyone. However another kind of scar known as the Keloid scarring can occur to anyone. It usually appears in a large red and purple mounted on either sides of the piercing. It can be sore sometimes as well, but not always the case. Some people use tea tree oil, Germ seed oil, and olive oil to treat there scar, while others apply natural sea salt solutions.

Boils and Abscesses:
This is caused when the bacteria attacks the skin tissue and are contained by the white blood cells. Boils are less threat full, while the abscesses can rupture the skin tissues, causing to spread more infection in the body. However they can be easily dealt with, if you bring them into notice earlier. Abscesses usually occur in the cases of new piercing where the puss or fluid has not drained properly. Abscesses may also lead to cause you fever and nausea. In the case of boils, keep the piercing free of bacteria. It can be dangerous, so if you are not aware of how to take care of your piercing then do visit the doctor.
