Removing Scars Left from Your Piercing
When the time comes that you have decided to take off your piercings, you probably would face a slightly disturbing problem—scars.
Scars primarily caused by piercings are called keloids. They appear to be raised fibrous tissues that occur mostly on skins that experienced traumatic injury with the piercing. Though keloids are not dangerous, they can be embarrassing as they may appear to be reddish or pink at times.
Some may say that once you have those scars, you will have them for the rest of your life. But they are wrong. There actually are ways that you can do to get rid of those scars. Here they are:
Wait until the wound is fully healed
Be patient. Your body is your first doctor. It can do the healing by itself giving a small size of the piercing. Some piercings can show no scars at all and some scars only appear to places where you can temporary hide them under your clothing.
Apply topical Vitamin E
You can buy a Vitamin E gel cap from department stores or pharmacies. Apply the gel to the scar and rub it well. Do this daily to help reduce the size of the scar.
Apply aspirin paste
Though not yet proven by most doctors, this has been done by the old folks back then and it worked. To do this, crush aspirin tablets to powder and add water to make it into a paste. Apply it to the keloid and wait until it dries. Wash it well with clean water. Repeat this daily until the scar disappears.
Compress the scar with a bandage
This can very well applicable to those scars that can be hidden by clothing such as those in the belly. Tightly apply bandage over the scar regularly for a period of six to twelve months to help reduce the keloid scars.
Rubbing with bio-oil
You can use natural remedies such as bio-oil to help reduce those scars. Bio-oil is a good source of nutrition for the skin.
Apply cocoa butter
It is often used to reduce the appearance of stretch marks but it can also prove to be effective on scars. It moistens the skin so that it becomes flexible and soft.
Add Mederma to your sunscreen
This is for scars that are exposed to the sun. Mederma is an over-the-counter topical cream that is used to heal the scars. Along with the sunscreen for preventing unequal discoloration, it can do well on healing the scar while preserving your skin’s beauty.
Massage the scar
While this may take several months to fully eliminate the scars, massaging is proven to be effective in reducing raised scars by breaking down the scar tissues.
Cover the scar with silicone gel wound
According to study, silicone gel wound can help reduce the thickness of the scar as it softens and flattens it.
With the advancement of technologies today, there are also surgeries designed to get rid of scars. Though they may come in high prices, they can permanently and directly remove the scar off your skin. With all the cheap and easy yet patience-requiring ways mentioned above, I suggest you weigh things up before deciding to get serious in removing your scars using surgeries. Also do not forget to consult with your plastic surgeon or piercer before you decide to undergo a scar removing surgery.
Here are some of the surgeries available:
Plastic surgery
This can surely and permanently make your scars disappear but this will require a fully healed piercing.
Resurfacing procedure
I do not necessarily recommend this because it will only dissipate over time. This is done by filling the missing tissue made from the pierce. Collagen or fat will be injected under your scar to level your skin, but it’s not really worth the try.
Corticosteroid injection
Steroids are injected to the skin and cause it to create new skin around the area. It will take many injections before seeing your results though, but you can take it if the pain is worth seeing your skin scar-less.
Additional tips
If you know that someday you would have to take your piercing off, might as well you would start preventing scars. One thing is taking care of your piercing by not taking it off by yourself mainly to avoid infection. Infection will basically lead to greater chances of scarring.
