Ode to seduction

Some things are – and will likely always be – synonymous with seduction. Black lace, high heeled shoes, full lips and fuller hair. Michel Zoeter took that theme – Seduction – and dedicated a photoshoot to it, amping up the sensuality volumes to unapologetic levels. It’s not about nudity though: model Laela Vastrick conveys seduction by her fierce attitude and poses while Lisa Schuil‘s styling does the rest.

Exclusive behind the scenes snaps of Karlie Kloss having a flapper moment

The era Americana Manhasset is channeling for their fall 2012 catalogue is immediately clear: this is the 1920s, and Karlie Kloss is the star of the (silent) show.
In a bobbed wig and makeup that accents her already-arched brows, Kloss plays the part perfectly. The title of the campaign is “Speechless” and, if that didn’t give it away, it’s inspired by contemporary silent film The Artist. More of a look at the campaign imagery soon; in the meantime, here are some behind the scenes shots of Karlie Kloss playing with the camera, including a few previously unreleased.

Ethnic / tribal fashion in 2012

In 2012 ethnically inspired / tribal fashion is a funny thing. It’s a trend to be certain, but I feel that it’s almost disingenuous to describe it as such. And that’s because Fashionising.com prefers to only highlight trends which are a part of a wider movement – shifts in society’s tastes are real fashion trends, designs pushed by a few designers and marketers are hype.
Yet here’s a guide on how to wear tribal and ethnic inspired fashion in spring 2012. Why? Not just because people will wear the look (a lot of people won’t even realise that they’re doing it) but because it’s a look that, in its spring / summer 2012 format, neatly segues from the patterened trends that continued to inspire many a fashion statement for men and women in 2011.
So the stage is set: a fashion trend that is all about ethnic and tribal elements and not about whole looks, one where the origins of the look are downplayed, and one that is both for men and women. So what does that boil down to?

Men’s tribal / ethnic fashion

Guys have tribal / ethnic fashion dead easy this season. For them it’s effectively about two elements, prints and weaves, interpreted in a host of ways.
If you had to highlight a single catwalk that inspired the look for men, it’s the Burberry spring 2012 men’s one. Here you see the trend at its broadest, with American Indian motifs and Ikat prints worked through a collection that has a 60s and 70s lean. At its most basic the look is worked as prints through shorts and shirts, and at the most extreme is worked through outerwear. It’s always a statement, but it’s one that’s easy to feel instantly comfortable with.

The Art Deco movement

The fashion clan knew exactly what they wanted after the end of World War I in the 1920s – being technologically advanced and giving birth to a ‘new woman’ in America. The rise of hedonism during the flapper period and living in the machine age was the way to live for the entirety of the decade.
But as the bobbed haircut, long-waisted dresses, V-necklines and ostrich features gained social acceptance, the erotic idea of androgyny also made ample amount of noise. By the end of the twenties, America had undergone dramatic social changes, resulting in another leap at the start of the 1930s.
So what really happened? The dawn of the Art Deco Movement happened.
